How Billable handles your data. We never capture content, keystrokes, or screenshots.
Billable never captures content, keystrokes, or screenshots. We use metadata only to detect client work. All processing is designed to happen on your machine first; only high-level session summaries are synced to our servers.
Local processing model
Data is analyzed on your device. Raw signals (app names, tab URLs, calendar titles, file paths) are turned into “sessions” locally. We never store or transmit your raw activity stream—only aggregated session data (e.g. “45 min, Client A, high confidence”) is synced so you can see your dashboard and daily summaries.

Exactly what we see
We use only the following to infer billable work:
- Active app names — e.g. “Slack”, “Zoom”, “Outlook” (not what you type or view).
- Tab URLs — domains only (e.g. “docs.client.com”), not full URLs or page content.
- Calendar titles — event names you choose (e.g. “Acme strategy call”) to match clients.
- File paths — folder/project paths (e.g. “/Projects/Acme”), never file contents.
We do not access email or chat message content, document text, or screen pixels.
Your control
- Pause Billable at any time without uninstalling.
- Exclude specific apps or domains from tracking.
- Review and delete the data we store for your account.
- We do not sell or share your data with third parties.
Transparency
Our scoring and session logic is documented (see How it works). We use clear, rule-based signals—not black-box AI on your content—so you can verify how we attribute work to clients.
